Government to open Temporary Passport Centre

Government is planning to open up a temporary passport issuing centre wider than the immigration office to solve the overcrowding at the immigration office.
The state minister for internal affairs Obiga Mario Kania revealed the development at Parliament on Thursday while answering the queries raised by the Dokolo district woman Member of Parliament, Cecilia Ogwal.
Cecilia Ogwal told Parliament on Thursday that several Ugandans including ladies with children are sleeping at the immigration office waiting for passports which she said undermines the dignity of a woman.
Cecilia Ogwal wanted the minister to explain why the process of issuing passports to Ugandans is moving slowly which has made many people to sleep at the migration headquarters waiting to get into lines in the morning to get their passports.
In his response to Mrs. Ogwal, Obiga Kania said in one week they will have completed creating a new and wider temporary passport issuing centre.
He noted that the crowd is being caused by the people who are coming to collect their passports whose process was completed during the covid19 period because they were issuing over 1500 passports a day for collection and that they have been advising people to follow their schedules of their time but they don’t.
He also added that t they have got also the problem of labour companies who come with all their people they intend to take abroad for work and sleep there waiting for their passports.
Kasanda North MP Patrick Nsamba Oshabe advised the minister that it is high time to establish regional office to ease on the burden crowds at the head office because people will be able to get their passports in their regions instead of coming to Kampala.
