Dr. Aceng, Diana Atwine Launch Campaign against Mosquito in Lango

The Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, who presided over the function, said they decided to take the programme to Lango to fight the rampant cases of malaria in the subregion.

The programme was first launched in the Kigezi region in June after malaria cases continued to rise in the area.

The health minister, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, who presided over the function, said they decided to take the programme to Lango to fight the rampant cases of malaria in the subregion.

“I was told the little money you earn is spent on the treatment of malaria,” Aceng said.

She explained that larviciding is the process of killing immature forms of the mosquito. She said safe larvicide (made from chlorophyll) is applied to places where mosquitoes breed to kill the larva.

“It is a safe intervention and several countries are now manufacturing larvicide,” she said.

Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary in the health ministry, said measures of fighting malaria can only work if people take personal responsibility by keeping their homes clean, through clearing bushes and compounds and ensuring there is no stagnant water nearby.

Mike Ogwang Olwa, the interim mayor of Lira city, said larviciding is an important intervention that should be supported.

“Spraying the larvae before it hatches should be rolled out to the whole city.

“We should ensure that we sleep under mosquito nets. Let them not end in Lake Kyoga for fishing or be used for seed beds,” he said

At the function, Dr Henry Mwebesa, the Director General of Health Services, said a team from the health ministry was in Lango sub-region to assess the delivery of health services.
