Thousands of protestors gathered peacefully in Nigeria’s economic hub Lagos to bring police brutality to an end. Those in the capital Abuja were met with teargas according to one of the organisers.
Nigerians want the disbandment of the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), widely accused of unlawful arrests, torture and even murder, but has since broadened to include all police forces.
The hashtag #EndSARS was the most trending topic on Twitter on Friday, and several Nigerian celebrities have expressed support for the movement.
The protest saw two people (one protestor and one police officer) killed in Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta state.
