The Buyaga County West Member of Parliament, Barnabas Tinkasimire has said the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga is blessing from God to the people of Uganda.
Tinkasimire gave his testimony on Wednesday at Speke Resort Munyonyo where the Speakership bid of Kadaga for the 11th Parliament was launched.
Tinkasimire narrated that it was solely the wisdom of Kadaga that saved him and three other MPs in 2014 when the Constitutional Court threw them out of Parliament after expulsion from the ruling National Resistance Movement party.
“I am still counting myself a Member of Parliament singularly because of the brainpower of this woman (Kadaga),” said Tinkasimire.
The Constitutional Court in February 2014 ruled that the fours MPs: Tinkasimire; Theodore Ssekikubo of Lwemiaga; Mohammed Nsereko of Kampala Central and Wilfred Nuwagaba of Ndorwa should vacate their seats in Parliament. The then Attorney General, Peter Nyombi in his submission on the floor agreed with the Constitutional Court ruling but the Speaker Kadaga disagreed with them.
The case went to the Supreme Court where seven judges on the bench agreed with Kadaga and the four NRM rebel MPs were allowed to retain their seats.
According to Tinkasimire, Kadaga’s wisdom was confirmed by the Supreme Court justices.
“Everyone in Government had wished us off Parliament. It took the Supreme Court to realize the wisdom of our Speaker where seven of the justices agreed with her,” said Tinkasimire.
The Buyaga county legislator also revealed that the Deputy Speaker of Parliament (Jacob Oulanyah) had told them that they were meant to leave Parliament.
“We went to the office of the Deputy Speaker together with our lawyer, Abdu Katuntu. He (deputy speaker) told us that there was no way we would remain at Parliament,” said Tinkasimire.
Kadaga is known for protecting the interests of Members of Parliament, something that has made her to be loved across the political divide.
Hundreds of Members of Parliament declared their support for Kadaga on Wednesday. They said she is the best candidate to protect the independence and integrity of Parliament.
